Trickery

“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  Psalm 91:2

“My tooth is loose.”

With excitement Keegan announced that he might be ready to begin the journey towards adult teeth.  Of course his excitement came primarily because he would be cashing in his baby teeth for well, cash.  After two weeks the tooth had continued to loosen but had not yet fallen out.  So, he took the next step.  He asked mom if she would tie the string and slam the door.

Because my wife is always up for such fun and slightly sadistic projects, she agreed.  But, when the rudimentary tooth removal contraption was locked and loaded, Keegan got cold feet.  With a whimper in his voice he asked Mary to let him slam the door when he had gotten up his courage.  Wanting to avoid any child abuse charges she agreed.  For fifteen minutes Keegan tried to talk himself into it and was just about there when he turned to Mary and said, “I should get a washcloth in case my tooth starts to bleed when it comes out.”  Slyly Mary said, “Great idea.  Why don’t you run upstairs to the bathroom and do that.”  With that, he turned and sprinted (as much as a 7 year old can) towards the stairs.  Two steps in, the tooth fell out.  When he realized what had happened, he turned and said, “You tricked me.”

That is the true story about how my oldest son lost his first tooth.

You know, there is a parallel here to the way that we (God’s children) deal with the challenge of trusting the Lord with certain areas of our life.  Just as Keegan knew that it was time for his tooth to come out and that there would be rewards waiting, we know that giving up certain things would be good for us and would allow us to experience more of God’s favor, provision, blessing, yet we get nervous about truly giving it up.

Maybe for you it is trusting God with a relationship that you know is not healthy or a time-stealer that isn’t productive.  Perhaps as you let God look deeply into your heart you hear his encouragement to trust Him with a dream that you have that you know is not His dream for you. But, because these things are so familiar and comfortable, we become nervous about ”slamming the door” and letting God remove it.

I understand the apprehension, but I also have discovered the freedom that comes when we trust the Lord with these things.  And, just as Keegan discovered, it isn’t nearly as painful as we have convinced ourselves it will be.

So, next time when you know that something is out of whack in your life and you hear God encouraging you to give something up, trust Him, close your eyes, and slam the door.  There is a reward waiting.  Greater joy, stronger faith, and rich blessings await.
